Research is Hope
Every year, close to 350,000 Americans die of lung disease. Lung disease is America's number three killer, responsible for one in seven deaths. Lung disease is not only a killer, most lung disease is chronic. An additional 35 million Americans are now living with chronic lung disease. The American Lung Association of Illinois is committed to the search for answers by funding research that helps unlock the most fundamental mysteries surrounding the onset and progression of disease.

Funds raised through the American Lung Association Golf Classic are used to support American Lung Association of Illinois research initiatives, including eligible projects conducted at SIU School of Medicine SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute and other local institutes.

Lung Health Hero: Each year a person, persons or organization(s) are honored at the current year's LHH.

Hospitals in southwest Illinois whose campuses became entirely smoke-free prior to the passage of the landmark Smoke-Free Illinois Bill were recognized as the 2008 Lung Health Heroes at last year’s Golf Classic.
